What Makes Quality Family Childcare?

High-quality family childcare offers many benefits:

  • It reflects and respects different cultures.
  •  It's based in local communities.
  • Caregivers can be male or female.
  • It can adapt to a variety of work schedules.
  • Because it’s home-based, it can be located almost anywhere.

The quality of a family childcare home is often measured by:

  • The caregiver or other caring adults in the home.
  • The physical environment of the setting.
  • How well the caregiver and environment meet the needs of both children and families.

B.C. Family Childcare Regulations

(Note: Some rules may vary by municipality.)

  • A license is required if a caregiver looks after more than two children not related by blood or marriage.
  • A licensed family childcare provider may care for up to seven children, including their own.

Choosing the Right Family Childcare

Even if a family childcare home is licensed or part of a Childcare Resource and Referral (CCRR) program, you are responsible for deciding if it’s the right fit for your child.

Tips for Selecting a Family Childcare Home

  • Read brochures and resources like Selecting Childcare (PDF available from the B.C. government or your local CCRR).
  • Call or visit your local CCRR office for help understanding care options and knowing what to look for.
  • CCRR offices can provide lists of both licensed and License-Not-Required (LNR) providers registered with them.

Affordable Child Care Benefit

You may qualify for financial help with childcare costs. The amount you receive depends on:

  • Your net family income
  • Eligible deductions
  • Number and ages of children in care
  • Number of hours care is needed

Visit the Ministry of Children and Family Development for full details.

Staying Involved in Your Child's Care

It’s important to regularly check in and make sure the care remains a good fit for your child.

Take time to:

  • Communicate openly with your provider.
  • Discuss any concerns or changes in your child’s needs.
  • Make sure the home is safe, clean, and well-maintained.

Supporting Your Childcare Provider

A strong parent-caregiver relationship benefits your child. You can support your provider by:

  • Offering positive feedback and appreciation.
  • Respecting agreed hours and policies.
  • Following health rules, such as keeping sick children home.
  • Letting them know if you’re running late.
  • Scheduling time to talk if there are issues to resolve.

Working together as a team ensures your child receives the consistent, high-quality care they deserve.
